WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J., Sept. 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Syncsort, a global leader in Big Data integration solutions, today announced the results from a multi-stage industry survey conducted over the first half of 2014 which show enterprise IT decision makers are making serious strategic commitments to Big Data migration and analytics programs, signaling an industry evolution from trial to action.
Syncsort polled over 100 IT decision makers, ranging from data scientists, data architects, developers and IT managers at the recent Hadoop Summit in San Jose and the Cloudera Session in Boston.
The majority of respondents were from medium to large enterprises who indicated that 5% or more of their current budgets were allocated to Big Data projects, much of that effort focusing on offloading data warehouse data for enterprise wide use through analytics. These results show, regardless of Hadoop distribution preference, decision makers have transitioned their focus from test or stealth projects to real world execution of Big Data strategies. Summary findings include:
- 62 percent of respondents expect to optimize enterprise data warehouses by offloading data and batch workloads (ELT) to Hadoop
- 69 percent of respondents expect to make enterprise-wide data available for analytics in Hadoop
- 53 percent of respondents are dedicating 5-10% of their planned budgets on Big Data projects
- 70+ percent of the respondents are from companies of $50 million+ in revenue
"Many industry pundits expected 2014 to be the year Big Data moved from skunkworks to real business impact. That transition is reflected in this survey, which shows that the decision makers who make Big Data projects a reality are committing real dollars and expecting bottom line benefits in return," said Josh Rogers, President, Syncsort. "This survey shows we've crossed into the next phase of Big Data adoption, where projects turn into longer term strategic investments and making enterprise-wide data available for actionable intelligence is becoming a reality for business."
The survey results support the assumptions of industry experts that Big Data adoption is on the rise including Jeff Kelly of Wikibon in the February 2014 Big Data Vendor Revenue and Market Forecast 2013-2017 noting that in 2013, "Both mega-IT-vendors and pure-play Big Data vendors took steps to better articulate their product & services roadmaps and larger visions for Big Data in the enterprise, creating greater confidence from enterprise buyers."
Additional data in Syncsort's Hadoop adoption survey supporting the notion that Big Data projects are becoming more mainstream was that the vast majority of respondents noted limited hurdles to securing Big Data project funding.
- Fewer than 40 percent of respondents noted they are facing challenges proving the short term and long term ROI or identifying business use cases.
- Fewer than 30 percent of respondents were dealing with issues in showing direct correlation of investment to business results.
- Fewer than 25 percent of respondents were dealing with budget already being allocated to supporting existing infrastructure needs.
These results show the industry at large made great strides in 2013 in articulating the real business value of investing in Big Data projects, and that customers are now able to justify moving forward with budget to build out Big Data strategies including Hadoop.
