Big Brothers Big Sisters Hopping For World Record
-Local Portland Chapter Seeks Guinness Title for Most Concurrent Hopscotch Players; Aim To Highlight Goal to Increase High School Graduation Rate-
PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Columbia northwest chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) today announced a world record setting event scheduled for Saturday, September 13, 2014. Described as the World's BIGGEST Hopscotch, nearly a thousand participants will gather at the Rose Quarter Commons to set a new Guinness World Record for the world's biggest game of hopscotch. The community is invited to join in the record-setting activity, as well as to learn about the local program and support Big Brothers Big Sisters and the children they serve in the region.
BBBS serves children facing adversity, from age 6 to graduation in the Portland and Vancouver metro areas, by pairing them with adult volunteers who serve as mentors. The adult "Bigs" are matched with their paired "Littles" through high school graduation.
"We know that positive, meaningful relationships deliver a sense of hope, purpose and self-esteem," said Andy Nelson, CEO, Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest. "We know too, that kids succeed – in the classroom and beyond – when they feel loved, safe and secure. Our goal is to help meet this need, increase the high school graduation rate, and to give every child a future with promise. The Guinness World Record is meant to raise awareness of this cause and we want the community to join, either as a participant or simply to watch as we shatter the Guinness Book World Record for the BIGGEST game of Hopscotch."
The Hopscotch event is free to Big Brothers Big Sisters Matches and their families and only costs $25 for others to join in on the fun. Advanced registration is required. The hopscotch registration and course open at 11:00 a.m. on September 13th. To sign-up, visit the Big Brothers Big Sisters web page at: itsBIGtime.org
