BI-LO Helping Customers Enjoy a Guilt-Free Thanksgiving
Healthy Eating Tips Just in Time for the Holidays
GREENVILLE, S.C., Nov. 11, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- There's no doubt that Thanksgiving tables around the country will soon be filled with all kinds of delectable goodness that comes with this much-anticipated holiday. BI-LO is prepared to help its customers enjoy a guilt-free Thanksgiving by providing suggestions and easy substitutions to shoppers' favorite holiday meals. With some minor modifications, maintaining the great taste in recipes, as well as health and weight-loss goals, is still a possibility, even during the holidays.
"A typical holiday meal can easily contain as many as 4,000 calories, which is double the recommended daily amount," said Monica Amburn, BI-LO's registered dietitian. "But during the holidays, it's important to enjoy some of your favorite dishes. Instead of avoiding your favorite foods, incorporate certain ingredient substitutions to make your meals a little lighter."
BI-LO is always finding ways to offer their customers more than just the highest quality products at the best possible price. Amburn is helping shoppers make small adjustments to their favorite seasonal recipes in the holiday edition of BI-LO's complimentary thrive!™ magazine, available in stores and online on Nov. 24.
Some of Amburn's healthy ingredient swap-outs for this season's recipes:
- In baked dishes, try substituting an equal amount of Southern Home® Natural Applesauce in place of butter or oil.
- For homemade mashed potatoes and holiday dips, use Southern Home® Light Sour Cream instead of regular sour cream.
- Season foods with herbs and spices for extra flavor without adding salt.
- For a green bean casserole topping, try almonds instead of fried onions for a healthier crunch.
- Incorporate reduced-fat cheeses to cut calories and fat in casseroles and side dishes.
"It's also important to remain physically active during the holiday season, to help ward off unwanted weight gain," added Amburn. "By incorporating exercise into your holiday routine, you'll not only work off any excess calories but help reduce stress levels as well."
