BHCC Tax Certificate Team Earns Recognition from State Department of Revenue
BOSTON, Aug. 27, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Five BHCC faculty and staff members were among those honored at a special performance recognition ceremony at the Massachusetts State House on July 31, 2014, hosted by the Massachusetts Department of Revenue.
The State House event, held in the Great Hall, recognized the team of BHCC faculty and staff members who worked with the Department of Revenue to create a new Certificate in Taxation Program at the College. The certificate prepares students with an intensive, practical application of skills and decision-making demanded by the taxation and auditing profession. The new program, a partnership between BHCC and the State Department of Revenue (DOR), was launched last fall. Students who successfully completed the prerequisite courses were accepted into a paid internship program at the DOR in Chelsea which included rotations in auditing and taxpayer services.
In her remarks at the State House, Bogusia Wojciechowska, Dean of Professional Studies at the College, thanked the DOR staff and the BHCC faculty and staff but had particular words of praise for the students. "The first cohort of interns was placed at the DOR in the spring. We told them that there was no pressure, but the future of the program rested on their shoulders! Needless to say, their performance surpassed everyone's expectations."
In addition to the rigorous certificate program, Bunker Hill and the DOR collaborated on the Business Administration Associate in Science Degree with a Taxation Option that was added to the curriculum this spring. It prepares students for entry-level taxation and auditing positions and will also position them to transfer to a four-year degree program.
BHCC team members recognized at the State House event included Anthony Fontes III, Associate Professor and Chair of the Business Administration Department; Daze S. Lee, Associate Professor in the Business Administration Department; Nancy Martignetti, Senior Academic Associate in Professional Studies; Tendai Nyakurimwa, Assistant Professor in the Business Administration Department; and Dean Wojciechowska. Also recognized were nine team members from the Department of Revenue.
