Composite resin fillings are made of a special quartz compound that contains no mercury and is designed to bond chemically with the tooth. Early tooth-colored dental fillings materials were effective at restoring teeth, but they often did not have the strength to withstand the massive bite forces to which they would be subjected in the molars and premolars.
The process for getting mercury-free fillings is not much different than that of receiving an amalgam filling. Dr. Kevin Sands numbs the area and removes the decayed tissue. The filling will then be placed and shaped before being cured with a special light and polished to match the surrounding tooth structure. If the patient has a mercury filling that needs to be removed before the composite filling can be placed, Dr. Sands can use a special procedure to minimize exposure and reduce the risk to the patient.
