Solutions Oriented
Komax has long been focused on creating products from a solutions perspective, and their Custody Transfer Mixer is little different. Initially created in response to a request from major oil companies, this unique option offers special features few others can: It can be in either a horizontal or vertical pipeline. In the horizontal line, the first element acts like a ramp, forcing the bottom water into the crude to be further mixed homogeneously.
"Conventional custody transfer mixing meant some pretty big problems," said Nick Polito/Applications Specialist. "We went back to the drawing board when we designed ours, working to eliminate problems like wall streaming and ensuring uniform distribution. We even designed it to make certain companies got a longer expected mixer life. Most of our customers enjoy twenty plus years with their mixers before it becomes necessary to upgrade."
A Truly Representative Sample
The goal with custody transfer mixing is always to make certain you get a truly representative sample, and with Komax, special modifications have been implemented to make that possible.
"One of the most important features of our products is the final mixing element that eliminates all of the axial rotation of the flow downstream of the mixer," said Nolan Smith/Senior Applications Specialist. "Violent rotation would create barber poling in the water, so we put our automatic sampler ports two to four pipe diameters downstream to ensure the fluid does not have any axial rotation. The result means highly reliable samples."
To date, Komax has installed more than 8,000 Custody Transfer Mixers worldwide. It's considered an industry standard. In fact, most companies will tell you that Komax mixers pay for themselves in as little as six hours.
