NEW YORK, Feb. 7, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Bernstein Liebhard LLP is investigating reports linking Remicade to TTP (Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura), a dangerous and potentially life-threatening blood disorder.
"The manufacturer admits in the 'Postmarketing Experience' section of the Remicade label that the medication has been linked to reports of TTP. Patients diagnosed with TTP following treatment with Remicade, or their surviving loved ones, are urged to report their experience to our firm as soon as possible," says Sandy A. Liebhard, a partner at Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs, medical devices, and consumer products.
Remicade and TTP
Remicade is an intravenous, biologic medication indicated to treat a variety of autoimmune disorders, including:
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Psoriatic arthritis
- Ulcerative colitis
- Pediatric ulcerative colitis
- Crohn's disease
- Pediatric Crohn's disease
- Ankylosing spondylitis
- Plaque psoriasis
Remicade belongs to a drug class called TNF-blockers, which inhibit a protein (tumor necrosis factor-alpha or TNF-alpha) that causes excess inflammation in people with these disorders.
TTP causes the platelets in the blood to stick together and form clots in the small vessels throughout the body. These clots can block blood flow, resulting in irreversible damage to the heart, lungs, kidneys and other vital organs. TTP also impedes the ability of platelets to clot when needed, increasing the risk of severe bleeding when injured.
TTP can be hereditary or it may be acquired in adulthood. Adult-onset TTP is sometimes secondary to another pre-disposing factor, including: autoimmune diseases, cancer, bone marrow transplant, pregnancy, HIV infection, pancreatitis, hepatitis and exposure to certain medications.
TTP can result in death if not recognized and treated appropriately. Patients at risk for TTP should contact their doctor if they experience any of the following signs and symptoms:
- Purpura: Purplish bruises that have no obvious cause.
- Petechia: Pinpoint-sized red or purple dots on the skin that resemble a rash.
- Jaundice: Yellowing of the skin or eyes.
- Fever
- Fatigue
- Confusion
- Weakness
- Headache
Severe cases of TTP can cause stroke, serious internal bleeding, or coma.
You may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more if you or a loved one were diagnosed with TTP following treatment with Remicade. To learn more, visit Bernstein Liebhard LLP's website or call the Firm directly at 800-511-5092.
