Beijing Again Takes Over U.S. Television with "Discover Beijing V: Live Like a Local"
NEW YORK, Aug. 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The educational series on China's capital, "Discover Beijing" aired its fifth episode "Live Like a Local" on Saturday, August 15th at 7 p.m. on ABC 7. Its aim remains to give American viewers a window into discovering Beijing, especially ahead of the 2022 Winter Olympics.
The fifth episode focuses on the local culture and tourist attractions of China's capital. It thoroughly explores aspects of Beijing's local life, including the villages and architecture, artisan traditions and ways of living healthy. The show explores the modern landscape intertwined with ancient villages known as Hutongs; and delves into ancient architecture, such as the Tanzhe temple.
The cultural blend of old and new is a prevalent theme in this installment. It can be seen in the paper cutting art forms, where young students and old masters alike create intricate images using paper and scissors alone or in the museum, a modern architectural marvel filled with ancient artifacts.
Even ancient Chinese healing methods, such as acupuncture, cupping and herbal medicine, are today being used in contemporary society. Simone Bassous comments that: "All in all, the juxtaposition of old and new is absolutely exciting!"
Though Beijing is rapidly modernizing, the series of "Discover Beijing" proves that local residents still embrace the past, while fusing the old with the new to provide a truly unique experience. Deputy Mayor of Beijing Cheng, Hong sums it up accurately by noting: "Beijing has always maintained its history and has made sure it is well preserved."
Harvard student, Zena Edosomwan, who coaches basketball in Beijing insists: "Being here in China I've really been able to experience life as a local and I truly enjoy it and love it. If you are looking for an experience that's very different and very positive, this is the place to be."
