Launched by Behringer Harvard in 2009, the student mentoring program is based on the premise that educating our community's children is a responsibility shared by all. In just two years, the program has grown to 33 actively participating mentors who donate 1,000 hours annually. Each mentor spends 45 minutes per week tutoring one assigned student in the third through fifth grades, with a focus on enhancing students' academic skills in math, science and writing.
Mr. Jason Mattox, Chief Operating Officer of Behringer Harvard, has supported the program by serving as "Principal for a Day" at the school and participating, along with other employees, in the school's annual Career Day. In addition to on-site meetings with students, Behringer Harvard's mentoring program exposes the students to real-world business experiences via a year-end field trip to Behringer Harvard headquarters.
"We are pleased to receive this recognition of a program that builds upon the significant accomplishments of Jerry R. Junkins Elementary School," said Mr. Mattox. "It's truly been a pleasure to work with the dedicated staff who serve so effectively the diverse group of students represented in their large, urban school district. Through this mentoring program, our employees have found it rewarding to contribute, even in a small way, to the development of youth who will one day become part of an educated workforce equipped to address the business challenges of tomorrow."
