A survey conducted by BedandBreakfast.com of its innkeepers reveals nearly 20 percent of the inns in the United States are haunted. No one's sure if it's the homemade breakfasts, warm hospitality, or the atmosphere of these historic homes, but these friendly spirits simply don't want to leave.
The following B&Bs dare to reveal their ghostly happenings:
Thayer's Historic Bed & Breakfast, Annandale, MN: Deemed one of the Top 10 Haunted B&Bs in the U.S., according to OddInns.com, Thayer's is owned by well-known psychic, Sharon Gammel. Built in 1895, this historic B&B offers a paranormal package complete with a psychic reading, a ghost hunting package and murder mystery dinners.
Baladerry Inn, Gettysburg, PA: Situated at the edge of the Gettysburg Battlefield, this B&B served as a field hospital of the Union Army during the war and supposedly, the ghostly history still lingers. Paranormal investigators have found dozens of electronic voice phenomena (EVPs) and taken spooky pictures, and some guests report ghostly encounters.
Thornewood Castle, Lakewood, WA: This B&B is so eerie that in 2002 it served as a set for Stephen King's miniseries Rose Red. The ghost of Chester Thorne and his daughter Anna have been spotted here and according to lore, if you stay in Chester's room and ask for help with financial matters, he will give you a hand. The house is also said to sit atop a fairy mound, and fairies are often reported in the gardens.
Magnolia Mansion, New Orleans, LA: Take a gander at the inn's guestbook and you can read numerous accounts of chance meetings with polite and friendly ghosts. Alarms, the quiet tinkling of a music box, overturned water glasses, and a little girl who visits in the night are common tales of spirits residing here. One guest even had the covers pulled up around her by an elusive visitor.
The Groveland Hotel, Groveland, CA: An old gold-miner named Lyle was found dead with a box of dynamite under his bed at this charming Gold Rush-era hotel, yet his spirit still lingers. While a recluse in life, Lyle's spirit tends to the playful. He particularly dislikes women's cosmetics on 'his' dresser and has been known to move such items to a nearby sink.
Stone Lion Inn, Guthrie, OK: A ghost dressed in formal attire often hangs around this funeral home-turned B&B; recognized by the scent of his cigar smoke. The original owners' daughter also haunts the inn. At eight, she was ill with whooping cough, and the family's maid overmedicated her with cough syrup. The ghost girl will creep into guest rooms from 2 a.m.-2:30 a.m. to pat inhabitants on the cheek. She disappears soon after they awake.
Captain Grant's, Poquetanuck, CT: Visitors at this inn are told if they hear a loud knock at the door, to not be surprised if no one is there. Those who stay in the "Adelaide Room" may have contact with the mysterious woman and her two children who once lived there--whether it is through the TV turning on and off or the shower curtain continuously falling down. One guest reported seeing her ChapStick® levitate out of her purse…
