RESTON, Va., April 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Bechtel announced that Dulles Transit Partners has achieved substantial completion of Phase 1 of the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project, also known as the Silver Line. The Bechtel-led team built the 11.7-mile rail line that will connect to the Washington, D.C., region's existing metro system for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.
"Substantial completion is an important milestone that signals major work is finished and that soon riders will travel on a 21st-century transit system," said Larry Melton, Bechtel's executive director for the project. "This achievement is remarkable given the complexity of building a rail line in a densely populated area where 700,000 cars travel each day."
The Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project is among the most sophisticated rail systems in the world. Riders can expect one of the smoothest train rides ever experienced as a result of innovative design and construction. In addition, state-of-the art technologies combined with each metro station's architecture, natural light, and finishes will enhance the passenger experience. Phase 1 of the project includes five stations, six miles of elevated track, and a tunnel running under one of the busiest retail areas in the country.
"This is a project built in partnership with the community. We employed more than 2,000 people, most of them from the Washington, D.C., area, and contracted with more than 200 local businesses over the course of the project," added Melton. "Everyone involved has remained focused on the same goal: delivering a world-class rail line. We are almost there."
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority will conduct the final testing and decide when to begin passenger service on the new line. Dulles Transit Partners will continue to perform work not related to testing, such as upgrades to Routes 7 and 123, completing sidewalks, landscaping, and general touch-ups in the stations.
A global leader in the rail industry, Bechtel has successfully delivered some of the largest rail projects in the world including the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit system, Athens Metro in Greece, and High Speed 1 in the United Kingdom.
