GLADSTONE, Australia, Oct. 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Bechtel has been recognized for its commitment to safety on the GLNG plant project with a National Safety Award of Excellence from the National Safety Council of Australia. The awards are Australia's longest-running, independent recognition program that honors outstanding health and safety initiatives in the workplace. Bechtel is designing and building the GLNG liquefaction plant and associated infrastructure for Australian company Santos and its partners on Curtis Island in Queensland.

Bechtel's GLNG project team developed an innovative program called the Safety League to create a long-term, sustainable safety culture. Borrowing from rugby, the program uses teams and easily-understood sports terminology and concepts to motivate people and reward safe behaviors.
The program also benefits the community by donating money to local charities on behalf of the teams that successfully meets safety challenges. Since the program's inception, the company has given nearly US$100,000 to organizations in the Gladstone area.
Bechtel is building three LNG projects on Curtis Island. The company has earned an industry-leading safety record which is significantly better than Australian standard for all industry.
