RESTON, Va., April 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- RFID Journal has recognized Bechtel with its Best RFID Implementation Award for the company's groundbreaking use of the tagging technology. Bechtel is using thousands of active radio frequency identification tags to manage construction materials for the three liquefied natural gas projects the company is building on Curtis Island in Queensland, Australia. The RFID Journal Awards recognize excellence in the creation and use of radio frequency identification technologies.
"The way the RFID technology has been applied on the Curtis Island projects really pushed the envelope, and the results are impressive," said Mike Lewis, Bechtel's global manager of construction. "We proved the technology can be used on a large scale to improve efficiencies in the management of materials, which is essential for delivering complex projects to our customers on time and within budget."
Bechtel deployed the Jovix™ system from Atlas RFID Solutions, Inc. to help track and deliver materials from multiple storage locations to the three project construction sites. Tracking and delivery for the projects presented unique challenges given the vast size of the construction sites and their island location, requiring the materials to be stored on the mainland and transported across a harbor. The approach enabled Bechtel to automate work processes typically performed manually and resulted in better-than-expected efficiencies.
The RFID Journal Award is the second recognition Bechtel has received for its use of the technology on the Curtis Island projects. The company also earned a CETI Award in the Intelligent and Automated Construction Jobsite category. The CETI Awards honor individuals and companies that have implemented new and emerging technologies.
A global leader in the engineering and construction industry, Bechtel continuously seeks innovative solutions to design and build some of the world's most complex projects. The company has helped lead the construction industry's use of RFID technology and piloted the technology for a Construction Industry Institute program in 2008.
