RESTON, Va., Nov. 4, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence today announced it has offered Bechtel two contracts to become a managed-service provider as part of MOD's effort to transform the delivery of military support services. The offer triggers a mandatory commercial stand-still period of at least 10 calendar days. Once the agreements are signed, Bechtel will drive improvements in purchasing, project management, and other key equipment programs for the UK's naval and air forces through MOD's Defence Equipment and Support organization.
"Helping the Ministry of Defence improve how it acquires materials, equipment, and services is critically important and a tremendous privilege," said Craig Albert, president of Bechtel's global government services business. "We look forward to working as part of the team to build on the progress of recent years."
The naval and air purchasing programs total up to three-quarters of the Ministry of Defence equipment budget. They include F-35 fighter aircraft, an aircraft-carrier program, and fast-attack and ballistic-missile submarines.
Each contract will have a base term of three-and-a-half years, with two one-year optional extensions. Bechtel will collaborate with fellow managed-service providers for land and Joint Enabler forces, human resources, finance, and management information systems.
"Bechtel will deploy a world-class team of professional project management and supply chain leaders to support the continued transformation of Defence Equipment and Support," said John Williams, managing director of Bechtel's UK government services company. "We are honored to be part of the community that serves the men and women of the UK's Armed Forces. There can be few more important responsibilities than helping to ensure those who risk their lives for our security get the equipment they need on time and on budget."
Once signed, the new contracts will add to Bechtel's 60-year history of service in the UK. The company has partnered on, managed, or executed many complex projects, such as the High Speed 1 rail line and the Channel Tunnel. Read about Bechtel's projects in the UK here.
The company has spent some $7 billion on goods and services in the UK over the past 20 years and employs more than 1,000 people in offices in London and Manchester, with an additional 400 based in the UK but working outside the country.
Bechtel has helped transform mission performance and delivery at key installations and facilities, including Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories and the Pantex and Y-12 nuclear defense plants in the U.S., missile defense installations in Alaska and the Marshall Islands, and the U.S. naval nuclear propulsion program.
