FREDERICK, Md., June 6, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Bechtel has been awarded a contract to provide engineering, procurement, and construction services for replacing three steam generators at Unit 2 of FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company's (FENOC) Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Station in Shippingport, Pennsylvania. Bechtel replaced three steam generators at Beaver Valley Unit 1 in 2006.

"We have a long-standing relationship with FENOC and look forward to continuing our work with them to deliver this project successfully and safely," said Alasdair Cathcart, president of Bechtel's power business. "We've provided services to more than 85 percent of the nation's nuclear fleet. As plants age, steam generator replacements will ensure they remain safe, reliable and their functional capabilities remain intact."
The Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Station provides power to nearly a million homes. Almost half of the power is produced by Unit 2, a pressurized water reactor generating 904 megawatts of electricity. Engineering work on the project will begin immediately with full site mobilization in late 2016 and generator replacement in March 2017.
"We have completed 34 steam generator replacements over the years," said Greg Ashley, president of Bechtel's nuclear business line. "The replacement steam generators weigh approximately 370 tons and will require an experienced team to execute the work. I'm confident the experience of our team and continued collaboration with FENOC will result in the safe and successful delivery of the Beaver Valley Unit 2 project."
In addition to work at the Beaver Valley facility, Bechtel is currently replacing steam generators at FENOC's Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station in Ohio. Steam generators function as heat exchangers to produce the superheated steam that is used to drive the turbine generator in a pressurized water reactor.
Bechtel has served the nuclear power market for more than 60 years, providing in excess of 74,000 megawatts of nuclear design, construction, and operating plant support experience to more than 150 nuclear power plants worldwide.
