RESTON, Va., May 4, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded three Bechtel-affiliated sites a total of five Sustainability Awards for 2014. The winners were recognized for helping aid the department in meeting its sustainability goals, driving improvements in waste management, energy and water use, and pollution prevention.
The awards include:
- Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, California, managed and operated by Lawrence Livermore National Security LLC – Green IT Stewardship, Water Management, and Goal Performance and Reporting.
- Pantex Plant, Texas, managed and operated by Consolidated Nuclear Security LLC – Water Management.
- Y-12 National Security Complex, Tennessee, also managed and operated by Consolidated Nuclear Security LLC – Sustainable Communications.
"The developments in sustainability on these critical projects benefit the programs as well as the surrounding communities," said Craig Albert, president of Bechtel's Nuclear, Security & Environmental business. "We salute all of the winners on their commitment to the nation and the environment, helping to make the world cleaner and safer."
These sites were also honored with several U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration Sustainability Awards for 2014.
The sites are all part of the NNSA's enterprise of facilities that carry out the agency's mission of ensuring the safety and effectiveness of U.S. nuclear defense. They support the downsizing of the nation's nuclear stockpile by conducting cutting-edge research related to physics, chemistry, supercomputing, advanced materials, and global security. NNSA is a semi-autonomous agency within the U.S. Department of Energy.
Bechtel teams with leading companies and organizations such as the University of California, AECOM, Babcock & Wilcox, Lockheed Martin, OrbitalATK, and Battelle Memorial institute for the management and operations of the labs and plants. The facilities together employ more than 15,000 people; operate vehicle fleets with hundreds of cars, trucks, and equipment; maintain buildings ranging in age from 70 years old to brand new; and in some cases run their own power plants and water treatment systems. The workforces conduct operations in highly regulated environments with complex needs in energy consumption, water use, and waste minimization and management.
Sustainability is a key focus of Bechtel's dedication to delivering world-class projects while improving the quality of life in the communities where the company works. From research, to design and construction, purchasing decisions, and office procedures, Bechtel's sustainability practices span multiple areas.
