Be Careful Carving That Turkey: Day after Thanksgiving Ranks 2nd Busiest Day of Year for Urgent Care
60 Percent of CityMD Physicians See Uptick in Thanksgiving-Related Carving Wounds
NEW YORK, Nov. 15, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- What are the busiest days of the year for urgent care centers? The answer may surprise you. According to CityMD, a network of urgent care centers in the New York City tristate area and Seattle, Wash., the day after Thanksgiving is the second busiest day of the year. The day after Christmas is the first.
In advance of Thanksgiving, a survey of 129 CityMD physicians found:
- 60 percent see an increase in patient visits related to cooking wounds around the Thanksgiving holiday, such as turkey carving accidents.
- 47 percent see an increase in gastrointestinal complaints from food poisoning or overeating.
- 42 percent see an increase in burn wounds related to cooking.
- 15 percent see an increase in orthopedic injuries from Thanksgiving-related activities, such as the annual "Turkey Bowl."
"On Thanksgiving, people want to be spending time with their family, so many will wait until the following day to seek treatment," said Dr. Frank Illuzzi, emergency physician at CityMD. "However, anyone with an injury should get checked out right away. People often underestimate the severity of cuts. Even a 12 hour delay of proper laceration repair increases the risk of infection or wound healing."
Many CityMD locations are open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thanksgiving and resume normal hours the following day. For a full list of locations and hours, visit: http://www.citymd.com/urgent-care-locations.
