BBVA Compass sponsors Eclipse Soccer Club
- Bank supports the dreams of young soccer players
- Sugar Land group trains youth and funds scholarships
- Partnership will help promote interest in the sport
HOUSTON, May 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- BBVA Compass and the Eclipse Soccer Club announced today that the bank is the official sponsor of the club, a Sugar Land-based organization that develops soccer players.
Founded in 1986, Eclipse offers community-based recreational, select and academy soccer programs in south and west Houston. More than 3,000 youngsters play in the club and some have gone on to play for top national universities.
"I think it's fantastic to see BBVA Compass extending its marketing efforts to youth soccer and the Eclipse Soccer Club," said Chris Canetti, Houston Dynamo president. "It is a strong club that provides valuable experiences and lessons for young players."
Eclipse players travel locally and internationally to hone their soccer skills. They face Spanish teams in matches and training sessions organized every year by Real Madrid, the Spanish soccer club. Last year, Eclipse players were part of the first U.S. team to ever win the XX Donosti Cup, a prestigious tournament played in San Sebastian, Spain.
Eclipse also provides scholarships, travel and fees for economically disadvantaged players.
"We have several talented players who could not afford to accomplish their dreams of playing soccer for Eclipse in international matches without such generous financial support," said Luis Labastida, Eclipse Soccer Club director. "We're excited to partner with BBVA Compass and look forward to promoting our shared passion for the world's greatest game."
The partnership with Eclipse is another part of the bank's efforts to improve the lives of residents in the communities it serves. With BBVA Compass Stadium set to open in Houston's East End on May 12, BBVA Compass and the Houston Dynamo have undertaken four community-service projects as part of their Building a Better Houston campaign. Players and bankers have repaired homes and taught children financial literacy, among other things.
"Soccer is the most popular sport in the world, one that upholds the values of BBVA Compass: teamwork, effort and fair play," said Mark Montgomery, BBVA Compass Houston city president. "We look forward to a long and exciting relationship with Eclipse."
