HOUSTON, May 5, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- BBVA Compass landed on DiversityInc's Top 50 Companies for Diversity list for the first time this year, a reflection of the bank's commitment to building a workforce and supplier pipeline that fully reflect the clients and businesses it serves.
The DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity list began in 2001, with each company that participates assessed on its own performance and also versus all competitors in four key areas of diversity management: the talent pipeline; talent development; leadership accountability; and supplier diversity. In awarding BBVA Compass a spot on the list, DiversityInc pointed to the following:
- The makeup of the bank's senior leadership ranks: The percentage of minorities (blacks, Latinos and Asians) in BBVA Compass' senior leadership is higher than the average among the Top 50 companies by 88.4 percent, or nearly double the Top 50 average.
- The bank's strong commitment to supplier diversity: BBVA Compass' percentage of total procurement spent with tier-1 minority-owned suppliers is 13.4 percent higher than the percentage averaged among the Top 50 companies.
"This is an important recognition for us, and we are very proud," said BBVA Compass CEO Onur Genç. "We are in a fiercely competitive industry that's undergoing a top-to-bottom digital transformation, and there's a need for us as a company to go far and go fast. We put a premium on being diverse and inclusive in every corner of our business because we know that it's not only the right thing to do, it's also smart business. It allows us to attract the most creative thinkers, the most innovative suppliers, and it gives us a competitive advantage in today's age of opportunity."
BBVA Compass Director of Corporate Responsibility & Reputation Reymundo Ocañas attended the Top 50 awards dinner in New York City on Tuesday evening. More than 1,800 companies competed for a spot on the Top 50 list, organizers said, with other spots going to corporate giants such as AT&T, Target and The Walt Disney Co. DiversityInc's metrics-driven Top 50 list is the core of the organization's business. It also publishes DiversityInc.com in service of its mission to bring education and clarity to the business benefits of diversity.
This is not the first time BBVA Compass has been recognized for its diversity efforts. It scored a 90 — the highest of any company headquartered in Alabama — on the 2017 Corporate Equality Index, the Human Rights Campaign's measure of LGBT-inclusive policies at some of the nation's largest workplaces. The bank, which is based in Birmingham, Ala., and has a sizeable presence in Texas and other states across the Sunbelt, did so in part on the strength of its workplace diversity and inclusion training program and the establishment of a Diversity Council to steer the bank's long-term inclusion efforts, among other things.
