BB&T names Hughes to lead Greater Washington Region
Waetjen to retire after 44-year banking career
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., July 25, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- BB&T today announced Jodie Hughes has been named president of its Greater Washington Region, which includes BB&T Community Banking markets in Washington, D.C., South Central Maryland and Northern Virginia. Hughes, who currently serves as director of regional commercial real estate, will assume his new role effective immediately. He will replace Dan Waetjen, who will retire Nov. 1, 2017, after a banking career spanning 44 years.

Hughes, 47, has more than 20 years of banking experience. He joined BB&T in 1996 as a business services officer and has served as senior credit officer in Morgantown, W.Va.; market president in Louisville, Ky.; and president of the West Virginia North Region. After the announcement of the Colonial acquisition in 2009, he was named president of the Montgomery, Ala.-based South Alabama Region. In 2013, he became director of regional commercial real estate.
A native of South Carolina, Hughes received his bachelor's degree in finance from Eastern New Mexico University and is a graduate of the Stonier Graduate School of Banking. He has served as a board member and in leadership positions for many community organizations during his career.

Waetjen, 66, has more than 44 years of financial services experience. He joined BB&T in 2007 as the Greater Washington Region president.

Waetjen earned his bachelor's degree in economics from Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C., and his master's degree in business administration, with a concentration in corporate finance, from Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio. He is a native Washingtonian and very active in the community serving on a number of various boards.
