Bayer Awarded Foreign Policy Association's 2014 Corporate Social Responsibility Award
WHIPPANY, N.J., May 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Bayer, the global health care, agriculture and high-tech polymer materials company, received the U.S.-based Foreign Policy Association's (FPA) 2014 Corporate Social Responsibility Award at the FPA's 95th annual dinner in New York City on May 21.
Dr. Marijn Dekkers, Bayer's Chairman and CEO, accepted the award honoring Bayer's good corporate citizenship as demonstrated by the many ways and extent to which the company gives back to the communities where it does business. Dr. Mae Jemison, scientist, educator and the country's first African American female astronaut, presented the award to Dr. Dekkers. Dr. Jemison has served as national spokesperson for Bayer's award-winning Making Science Make Sense® companywide initiative since 1995.
Through its three foundations – the Bayer Science & Education Foundation, the Bayer Cares Foundation and the Bayer USA Foundation, Bayer provided some €50 million for these activities in 2013. As with its business operations, Bayer's social commitment is based on innovation and pioneering spirit.
"Bayer's overarching goal is to help more and more people live a better life, and our science helps us to continuously innovate to support this goal," Dr. Dekkers said. "We share the FPA's goal to develop awareness, understanding and informed opinion on critical issues happening in the world today. We thank the FPA for this special honor, which recognizes the tireless work of our employees on corporate social responsibility activities worldwide."
In the United States, Bayer Corporation and the Bayer USA Foundation partner with local community leaders to provide philanthropic support to organizations and programs centered on education and workforce development, health and human services, and the environment and sustainability.
Bayer aligns the Foundation's philanthropic work with its significant investments in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education and Making Science Make Sense, as well as patient advocacy, disaster relief, diversity and inclusion, among others.
Bayer was one of three companies named by FPA as a 2014 CSR Award recipient. Viacom Inc. and John Hancock Financial Services also received awards.
