As a result of the reconstitution, a total of 30 companies will be replaced in the Index. Some of the companies being added to the Index include LinkedIn Corporation (LNKD), GNC Holdings Inc. (GNC), The Madison Square Garden Company (MSG), Medivation, Inc. (MDVN), and Marathon Petroleum Corporation (MPC).
The BATS 1000 Index, which marks its third anniversary on July 1, tracks the performance of 1,000 U.S. securities within 10 equally-weighted industry sectors. The BATS 1000 Index is rebalanced on an annual basis to assign an equal 10% weighting to each of its 10 sectors.
"Three years ago we set out to create a new U.S. equities market benchmark that would capture the overall mood and market disposition more effectively, and we're excited about the track record of the BATS 1000 Index," said Joe Ratterman, president and chief executive officer of BATS Global Markets. "The Index is designed to help investors gauge current market conditions and is a valuable measure of today's U.S. equities market."
The BATS 1000 Index is the only U.S. broad market indicator that is exchange-sponsored and primary listings neutral. Unlike indices generated by other exchanges, the BATS 1000 Index includes securities listed on more than one U.S. securities exchange.
Yesterday, the BATS 1000 Index closed at 14,963.66, up 4.0% year-to-date. For the same timeframe the S&P 500 Index was up 5.9%. The BATS 1000 Index was launched on July 1, 2009, with a base value of 10,000.
