Bathhouse/Food-service Complex, Designed by Angelini & Associates Architects, Opens at Martindale Beach at Kensington Metropark
A new combination bathhouse/food-service complex, designed by Angelini & Associates Architects, opened at Kensington Metropark's Martindale Beach in Milford, Michigan
ANN ARBOR, Mich., Aug. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- (http://www.myprgenie.com) -- A new $2.7 million bathhouse/food-service complex, designed by Angelini & Associates Architects, opened at Kensington Metropark's Martindale Beach in Milford, Michigan this summer. The new bathhouse and food concession buildings are the second of two projects by the Huron-Clinton Metroparks to upgrade the facilities at Martindale Beach. The first project was the construction of the adjacent Splash 'n' Blast spray-ground and water-slide facility that opened in 2007, with a pump house designed by Angelini & Associates Architects. Together, these two projects represent an investment of more than $5 million by the Metroparks to upgrade Martindale Beach.
Angelini & Associates Architects provided the architectural design services for the project and worked in tandem with the engineering and planning departments from the Huron-Clinton Metroparks, who provided site engineering and landscape design, in addition to project management. Braun Construction Group of Farmington Hills was the general contractor for the bathhouse/food-service complex.
The complex consists of two buildings that front a curved plaza facing Kent Lake. The bathhouse totals 4300 sq. ft., which includes men's and women's restrooms, showers, and changing facilities, along with three family changing rooms and an attached garage for equipment to maintain the site and beach. The food service building with beach-front administration totals 3500 sq. ft., which includes a concession kitchen, staff restrooms, lockers, showers, lunchroom, manager's office, and first aid station. The buildings define the edge of the three-acre lake-front plaza, which also features walkways, landscaping, and table seating shaded by umbrellas and locust trees.
The massing of the two buildings at the center of the site creates a "gateway" into the plaza and frames the vista to Kent Lake. Roof pitches are low and the scale of the alternating roof angles harmonize with the scale of the adjacent trees and hills when seen from the waterfront or from within the park. High windows near the peaks of the roofs bring natural light into the building and provide ventilation.
The new bathhouse/food-service complex replaces the original bathhouse constructed in 1952. The new buildings reflect the values of the Metroparks in using durable, long-lasting, low-maintenance materials intended to last another fifty years. Exterior materials include a painted galvanized steel frame structure, standing seam metal roofing, tan brick veneer, and blue powder-coated windows and doors; interiors include painted concrete masonry unit walls and ceramic tile floors.
