Barrett-Jackson fame translates into better service for Assiter Auctioneers sellers
AMARILLO, Texas, Oct. 3, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- To someone watching on TV while Spanky Assiter sells a Mustang for $500,000, the glamor of a Barrett-Jackson auction in Las Vegas may seem far removed from the day-to-day work of selling land and bulldozers back home in Amarillo. With Assiter Auctioneers serving as the official auctioneer for Barrett-Jackson, Assiter has become a household name to car collectors and fans throughout the country.
But after the final team meetings following the recent three-day televised event, which generated more than $32 million in sales, Assiter immediately shifted back into his day-to-day task of organizing auctions for such assets as a well-known restaurant, meat market building, subdivision lots, houses and farm equipment. And Assiter believes his team returns better equipped for the lower key auctions.
"Barrett-Jackson just keeps getting bigger and bigger, and we learn something every time that we can put to work back home. Of course, the attention we get helps with our name recognition as we market Assiter Auctioneers. But more importantly, the Barrett-Jackson auctions help us fine tune our processes for selling land, equipment, homes and other assets here in Texas," said Assiter.
The giant televised auctions, which air live for three consecutive days, call for a tightly orchestrated effort with a team of auctioneers and bid assistants from all over the country. "It's a huge management task just to get everybody where they need to be, getting them assigned where they're needed, and making sure they understand the assets and the dynamics involved," said Assiter. "That translates into better services for our clients back home."
He pointed to the recent auction of McLean Ranch, a sprawling 16,000-acre ranch in McLean. "Not everybody can pull off an auction like that, but we got it sold for just under $16.8 million, using some of the same management processes and techniques we've honed in our Barrett-Jackson auctions," he said. "Ultimately, it comes down to the same process: Knowing what you're selling and working with bidders to get the best price you can for the asset – whether it's a classic Rolls Royce for a museum or a backhoe."
On the home front, Assiter said his core auction business continues to grow with more auctions – both live and online.
"Our online auctions receive close staff attention just like our live ones do, whether we're selling cars or antique dolls. Every piece is important to the seller, and will make some buyer happy. That's what it's about no matter how we do it," he said.
