Baron & Budd, P.C. Announces Victory for Homeowners in First Chinese Drywall Trial
Federal Judge awards $2.6 million to 7 families and sets standard for remediation
NEW ORLEANS, April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Baron & Budd, P.C. today announced a precedent-setting ruling for homeowners struggling with toxic Chinese drywall. On April 8, United States District Judge Eldon E. Fallon issued his 108-page opinion describing in detail scientific findings about the effects of Chinese drywall on and the necessary scope of remediation. He awarded a total of $2,609,129.99 to seven families with Chinese drywall in a default judgment against Taishan Gypsum Co. Ltd. (Taishan), a Chinese company which failed to appear in the lawsuit. Judge Fallon oversees the federal multi-district litigation (MDL) court in New Orleans, where all pending Chinese drywall cases filed in federal court have been consolidated.
"These homeowners have already suffered terrible losses and have received no help from their insurance companies, their builders, their mortgage lenders, or the manufacturers," said Bruce Steckler, Baron & Budd shareholder and member of the Plaintiffs' Steering Committee in the federal Chinese drywall litigation. "We're pleased that Judge Fallon saw the seriousness of the damages, and we will do everything we can to enforce this court's judgment against Taishan."
Baron & Budd attorney Kelly Reddell was part of the trial team that achieved this groundbreaking result.
