SYRACUSE, N.Y., May 12, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- On May 7, 2016, Maria Milanesi and Lisa Austin of Bankers Healthcare Group participated in the inaugural Women's Right to Run 19K & 5K in Seneca Falls, New York. The 19K distance pays tribute to the 19th amendment, which granted women the right to vote.
Generations Bank was the race's organizing sponsor. Funds raised will support the National Women's Hall of Fame's campaign to renovate Seneca Falls Knitting Mill into The Center for Great Women.
"Generations Bank put on a great race," said Milanesi. "The weather was perfect and the community came out in full force to support all the participants. I cannot wait for next year!" Milanesi and Austin support other local races, such as the Gillie Girl Triathlon, which benefits the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund of Central New York.
"We're proud of our employees for being involved in community athletic events and supporting the fundraising efforts of such significant causes," said BHG CEO Al Crawford. "The Women's Right to Run celebrates a paramount moment in our nation's history and honors those who fiercely advocated for women's suffrage and gender equality."
Kathrine Switzer was the first woman to formally finish the previously all-male Boston Marathon, and went on to win the 1974 New York City Marathon. She is an activist and author and served as the Women's Right to Run national spokesperson.
"As an inductee of the National Women's Hall of Fame, it is truly an honor to be a part of this race," Switzer said in a press release. "The race is a fitting tribute to the 19th amendment which gave women the right to vote, and 19km – 11.8 challenging miles – reflects with a unique distance the challenges our foremothers had in going the distance to get that vote."
