SOUTHWEST RANCHES, Fla., Dec. 16, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Each holiday season, the Salvation Army works with local businesses, churches and schools to collect gifts for needy children and teens who otherwise may not receive any presents for the holidays. Bankers Healthcare Group, a leading provider of innovative financing solutions for healthcare professionals, was one of the more than 100 organizations to participate in Fort Lauderdale.
BHG Funding Coordinator Dawn Hart normally organizes the company secret Santa gift exchange. But this year, she and her colleague Jennifer Nino thought they could put their efforts to better use.
"We decided on the Salvation Army Angel Tree because we thought that providing for our community and its children in need was more important than getting each other gifts," said Hart. Under their leadership, BHG employees collectively donated 116 unwrapped toys to children in need.
Angel Tree volunteers set up a tree and receive angel ornaments from the Salvation Army. Each ornament has the name, age, clothing size and special request of a child in need. After the gifts have been collected, the Salvation Army gives the gifts to parents a few days before Christmas. When the children receive the gifts, they believe that they are from their parents or Santa Claus.
"It's wonderful that businesses contribute to charity. But instances like this one are even more remarkable," said BHG President and Co-founder Bob Castro. "This is the result of a few individuals who decided to take initiative out of their own desire to give back. I'm proud to work among people like this."
