Balcony Downs Estate set for auction; includes historic home, stables and guest cottages

NATURAL BRIDGE, Va., April 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Balcony Downs -- an estate at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains with a stately manor house, horse barn, two cottages and the remains of a 19th century dairy barn -- will sell at auction Friday, May 3, with Woltz & Associates managing the auction.

"This is a marvelous old estate on approximately 50 acres on a broad, flat plain beneath the famous Three Sisters Knobs. It's a stunning piece of ground with a gorgeous home and an ideal place to raise and ride horses," said Jim Woltz, president of the auction company.

The estate itself dates back to 1742, and the home was originally built in 1822. Over the years, other improvements have been added, including the two cottages, the six-stall horse barn and paddock, granary, and even a 1,200-foot landing strip.

"Practically everything on the property has a story behind it. There's a stone cottage that was reportedly built as an ice house in the late 1890s. And the dairy barn was made of bricks that were originally to have been used to build a hotel in Glasgow. But the hotel never got built, and the bricks ended up being used for the barn, which -- among other things -- housed the Old Dominion Furniture Company in the 1940s," said Woltz. "The property has open pastures, wooded areas and a beautiful pond fed by a spring. Yet, it is less than 10 miles from I-81 (Natural Bridge) and within 15 miles of Lexington and the Virginia Horse Center."
