"Our Firm represents a number of plaintiffs in the Bair Hugger litigation, and we continue to hear from individuals who developed post-operative deep joint infections allegedly associated with use of this surgical warming system. We are not surprised that the multidistrict litigation has continued to grow at a significant rate," says Sandy A. Liebhard, a partner at Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is offering free, no-obligation legal reviews to hip and knee replacement patients who allegedly developed post-operative deep joint following a hip or knee replacement that utilized the Bair Hugger system.
Bair Hugger Infection Allegations
The 3M Bair Hugger is used during surgical procedures to regulate a patient's body temperature and prevent hypothermia. The forced air warmer system was developed by Arizant Healthcare, Inc. (now a subsidiary of the 3M Companies) more than 25 years ago, and has been used to warm more than 200 million surgical patients. The apparatus consists of a portable heater/blower connected to disposable, inflatable blanket that is draped over a patient during and after surgery. The heater takes in and warms ambient air, which is then gently forced through the hose into the blanket.
All of the Bair Hugger lawsuits pending in this proceeding were filed on behalf of hip and knee replacement patients who developed deep joint infections, which they claim resulted from Bair Hugger's allegedly defective design. Their complaints charge that use of the forced air warming can alter the flow of air in the operating room, allowing potentially contaminated air from the floor to come into contact with the patient's open wound. This greatly increases the odds that an infection will develop within the joint. Plaintiffs further allege that the 3M Company and Arizant have been aware of this problem for years, yet failed to make design changes to the Bair Hugger or issue any warnings to the medical community.
Bernstein Liebhard LLP continues to offer free, no-obligation legal reviews to individuals who allegedly suffered serious deep joint infections due to the 3M Bair Hugger forced air warmer blanket.
