Bail For U.S. Citizen Zack Shahin Must Be Immediate and Reasonable: Reiterates U.S. Legal Counsel to Zack Shahin

WASHINGTON, June 14, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Despite calls for immediate and reasonable bail since the start of Zack Shahin's hunger strike 31 days ago, the United States government remains silent and still has not publicly called for Zack's bail nor for qualified, independent medical attention as his health rapidly declines. As Secretary of State Clinton, Under Secretary for Human Rights Otero, and Assistant Secretary for Near East Feltman remain silent as Dubai's due process and rule of law violations continue in Zack's case, U.S. legal counsel to Zack Shahin issued the following statement.
"Since Zack Shahin began his hunger strike on May 14, Zack and his legal defense team have been crystal clear that immediate and reasonable bail must be granted. By reasonable, the bail offer must be consistent with other bail bonds issued to both Emiratis and expatriates who were charged with similar crimes. Unfortunately, Zack's health has rapidly declined in the 31 days since his hunger strike began. Zack has no intention to accept any unreasonable bail. Secretary Clinton must take the moral high ground, not hesitate any longer, and publicly rebuke Dubai's ongoing mistreatment of a U.S. citizen. There must be a public call from the U.S. government for an immediate medical examination by a qualified and independent doctor, for which the Shahin family will pay, and arrangements made for granting Zack reasonable bail. Any delay in the U.S. government's responsibility to represent the life and interests of Zack Shahin will force Zack to consider taking even more drastic steps to accelerate the adverse affects of his hunger strike."
