Bahrain's Prime Minister Calls for Anti-Corruption Measures

MANAMA, Bahrain, Aug. 25, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Bahrain's Prime Minister called for new measures to combat economic crime in an effort to fight corruption. His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa noted in a work meeting that the establishment of an anti-corruption agency would be vital to ensuring a just economic system.

"Interior Ministry powers need to be expanded to strengthen internal and external operations of the government and implement what has been agreed upon at the National Dialogue," the Prime Minister said. Bolstering anti-corruption measures is one of many areas of National Dialogue reforms that the government will be implementing.

"This will in turn enhance transparency, competitiveness, economic development and improve the performance of state agencies," the Prime Minister continued.

In addition, the Prime Minister instructed authorities to consider new anti-corruption regulations, and to restrict membership of government representatives on boards of institutions and state firms.

"These new rules should also ensure that these government representatives must not be on the board of two establishments at any given time," the Prime Minister concluded.

Interior Minister Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa will submit a proposal to Bahrain's Cabinet for administrative, technical and legal organizations to implement anti-corruption reforms.
