Bahrain's Muharraq City Council Goes Green with New Paperless Initiative
MANAMA, Bahrain, Oct. 11, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Bahrain's Muharraq City Council is eliminating printed agendas and materials during council meetings in an effort to be more environmentally friendly and set a precedent within the government.
"By doing away with this item of consumables we are able to save on much paper and in the process helping save the environment," Abdulnasser Al Mahmeed, chairman of the Muharraq Municipal Council, said.
The council plans to replace all printing and paper, including books, with the use of individual laptops. To offset the expense of the laptops, the council is removing personal computers from council member offices.
Council meetings are also entering the digital age with videotaped footage of meetings that will ultimately be streamed to the building's lobby for public viewing. Footage will also be archived on the website, providing a more user-friendly experience for citizens.
"Once these are in place, the website and all channels on the social websites will be enabled so citizens can browse the net and know what has been discussed," Al Mahmeed said.
