Bahrain Welcomes NGOs to Monitor Upcoming Elections
MANAMA, Bahrain, Aug. 5, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Non-governmental organizations will be permitted to monitor Bahrain's upcoming parliamentary special election in September, the Kingdom's justice minister said.
"We are keen on the participation of the civil societies in monitoring the elections and helping ensure their success," Shaikh Khalid Bin Ali Al Khalifa told Gulf Daily News.
Following the resignation of 18 members of Parliament from the Al Wefaq Political Society, His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa called for a special election to fill their seats. This would "allow the men and women of Bahrain to elect their representatives," His Majesty the King said.
The by-election will be held on September 24th and the ministry has stressed its commitment to the success of the election by constructing five new polling places to permit people to vote outside their constituencies, the report continued.
"Voters can avoid long queues or avoid going to their designated polling stations by simply casting their ballots in any of the general polling areas," the authorities said.
