Back-to-School Physical Exams: What Every Parent and Child Should Know About Today's Modern Health Check-up

CHICAGO, Aug. 23, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Children in Illinois are expected to have four physical exams throughout their educational career—one at the onset of preschool/daycare, another at the start of kindergarten, a third in the sixth grade and a fourth at the start of high school. In the past, these exams were primarily to ensure vaccinations and general good health. Today, these exams have been expanded to address societal realities affecting our children. Exams now include screening for social and emotional issues and adolescent sexual activity/responsibility.

To make parents aware of today's modern school physical exams, on Monday, August 29 at 6:00pm Chicago Access Network (CAN-TV), Channel 21, will air a live call-in program, "Community Health," discussing how to prepare parents and their children for their back-to-school medical exam.

Host Lenore Janecek, president and founder of SAVE THE PATIENT, and Dr. Renee M. Poole, MD will share insights into the scope of the new school physical exams, the medical information that parents should bring to the exams, and the need for this check on the overall wellbeing of their children.

Dr. Poole is a Family Physician specializing in Adolescent Health at Access Community Health Network on Chicago's south side, as well as a Clinical Instructor in the Family Medicine Department of the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine.
