Babson Professor Julie Levinson Edits New Book About Filmmaker Alexander Payne
Faculty member Levinson teaches courses in film and cultural history
WELLESLEY, Mass., Dec. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Babson College Professor of Film, Julie Levinson, has edited the new book Alexander Payne: Interviews (Conversations with Filmmakers Series), published by the University Press of Mississippi.
In this first compilation of his interviews, Alexander Payne reveals himself as a captivating conversationalist musing on many subjects including his own creative process, his commitment to telling character-centered stories, and his abiding admiration for movies and directors from across decades of film history.
"Alexander is remarkably erudite, articulate, and wry so it was a delight to interview him and to compile the conversations he has had with others over the years including talk show host Charlie Rose and National Public Radio's Terry Gross," said Levinson.
The book's discussions range from 1996, shortly after the release of his first film, Citizen Ruth, to the debut of Nebraska at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013.
Critics describe Payne as one of the few contemporary filmmakers who consistently manages to buck the current trend toward bombastic blockbusters. Like the 1970s, director-driven cinema that he cherishes, his films are small-scale character studies that manage to maintain a delicate balance between sharp satire and genuine poignancy.
