MALVERN, Pa., Oct. 26, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Azura Vascular Care, a national leader in outpatient, minimally invasive vascular specialty services including dialysis access management, announces that a retrospective analysis of patient data suggests anemia may contribute to complications during dialysis vascular access (VA) interventions and increase the risk of hospitalization.
The abstract was selected for poster presentation at the American Society of Nephrology's (ASN) Kidney Week 2018 Annual Meeting. The prestigious ASN annual conference draws thousands of kidney health care professionals from all over the world to share information and research to advance the field of kidney disease.
"As pioneers in the field of vascular access, we are delighted to play a role in this important dialogue that affects one of the United States' most vulnerable populations—dialysis patients," said Dr. Gregg Miller, Vice President of Operations for Azura Vascular Care. "The abstract describes the outcome of specific factors that contribute to complications during surgery for patients who underwent dialysis access procedures."
The research suggests that hemoglobin levels below 10 mg/dl are associated with an increased risk of perioperative complications. Other patient-specific risk factors such as age and body mass index (BMI) are not associated with an increased risk of complications. These findings may help guide preoperative screenings, which rely on the physicians' clinical judgment to weigh objective and subjective criteria against the risk/necessity of any procedure.
Dr. Miller, a published expert, worked with John Larkin, Director of Publications and Research, Fresenius Medical Care North America (FMCNA), and others at both Azura and Fresenius to develop content for the poster.
