AZEK Permeable Pavers Get High Ratings from the Toronto & Region Conservation Authority Tests of Storm Water Runoff
SCRANTON, Pa., Oct. 1, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Following a two-year test of various types of pavement, The Living City Campus at Kortright, a centre of excellence for urban sustainability in Vaughan, Ontario, north of Toronto, has shown positive results for AZEK Permeable Pavers. The Toronto & Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) incorporated the pavers as a test surface in a 1,200 sq. ft. portion of the centre's parking area. Much of the testing is funded by community grants.
"We are very encouraged by the performance of our AZEK Permeable Pavers in the independent tests performed by the TRCA," said Michael Gori, VP of Product Management, AZEK Building Products. "We hope it sheds light on future applications for municipalities' permeable pavement needs."
Made with up to 95% recycled tires and various plastics, AZEK Permeable Pavers from AZEK Building Products is a hardscape solution for patios and driveways in areas that require water management. AZEK Pavers are also available in Standard Pavers for new construction and Resurfacing Pavers for covering over cracked concrete patios, decks, balconies or rooftops.
"The testing evaluates the pavers' effectiveness for runoff and water quality control, maintenance needs and how they endure Ontario's climate," said Dean Young, Project Manager for the TRCA. Product performance testing at the Living City Campus also includes several types of interlocking concrete pavers and pervious concrete, allowing direct comparisons to be made between the products, in relation to a conventional asphalt surface.
"AZEK Permeable Pavers have shown excellent runoff reduction performance with the highest surface infiltration rate of all the interlocking paver products examined and the quality of infiltrated water has shown no signs of chemical leaching from the pavers," said Young. Young said the pavers' durability is also performing above and beyond expectations, enduring two Canadian winters without the need for replacement, even after frequent snow plowing.
"Testing of the pavement products is ongoing but these are very promising results," said Young. "The TRCA will continue to test pavement types with the hope of being able to recommend better building products to municipalities and the public."
