AZEK® Deck Enhances Outdoor Living for Georgia Military Family as Part of 'Deck for A Soldier' Program

CUMMING, Ga., Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Captain Don Thompson, wife Dana and their four children needed an outdoor oasis to spend quality time, and with Don's busy military schedule, there was no time for backyard improvements.  That is where the Greater Atlanta Chapter of the North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA) stepped in with its "Deck for A Solider" program.  This program provided the Thompsons with a beautiful two-level deck made of AZEK, the ultimate in low-maintenance deck materials, built by local volunteer contractors.

"Local deck contractors joined forces to volunteer countless hours of labor and materials to build the AZEK decks for the Thompson family," said Bobby Parks, owner of Peachtree Decks & Porches and NADRA's Atlanta Chapter President.  These companies included Tailor Decks, Atlanta Deck & Fence, DECKSOUTH, Decks & More, as well as RainAway, which supplied and installed the underdeck system.  "Normally business competitors, these folks worked side by side for a great cause," he said.

After serving tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, Captain Thompson is a full-time infantryman in the Active Guard Reserve and travels to the Macon Armory and several Air Force bases regularly.  According to wife Dana, his demanding hours create a need for relaxation at home—and their backyard was just not a comfortable space.

"We started using the new deck right away for meals, play time and to relax," said Captain Thompson.  "It really allows us to enjoy the outdoors together."  From Dana's perspective, she is thrilled with the low-maintenance.  "As the one who manages the home while Don is away, the AZEK Deck really frees me up from worrying about needing to maintain the deck on a yearly basis.  And, with the kids using it as an extended play area, the scratch-resistant surface is a major plus.  If we ever move, I will use the material again and would recommend the investment!"
