Awareness Campaign to Explain ABCs of Government Overspending
New group will educate Americans on how government spending affects prosperity
ARLINGTON, Va., Feb. 1 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The federal government will spend $3.7 trillion this year, which is more than $12,000 a year per American, and more than at any other time in post-World War II history. Public Notice (www.thepublicnotice.org), a new educational non-profit organization, will launch today an effort to highlight this and other budget and economic news. This awareness campaign, called Bankrupting America (www.bankruptingamerica.org), will scrutinize how government spending affects Americans' everyday financial lives. It will also explore the effects tax, trade, and regulatory policies have on the economy.
"It doesn't matter if you're from a red, blue or purple state, government overspending has real economic consequences - for now, and for the future," said Public Notice's executive director Gretchen Hamel. "There's an appetite for change and we'll help focus this energy."
Americans are already wary of government spending. According to a recent Gallup Poll, 58 percent of respondents said they would prefer a smaller government that provides fewer services. This initiative, in an effort to help citizens keep their lawmakers more fiscally responsible, will more fully explain the consequences of bad economic policy and overspending.
"Consider Bankrupting America a support group to help taxpayers counsel their representatives with their chronic addiction to overspending," explained Hamel. "It's time Americans unite and tell Washington that it needs to tighten its belt, just as families across the nation have done."
Public Notice is an independent, bipartisan, non-profit, 501(c)(4) organization dedicated to providing facts and insights on the effect public policy has on Americans' financial well being.
