The 2014 Avon Walk season is open for registration and will take place in Houston (April 12-13); Washington (May 3-4); Boston (May 17-18); Chicago (May 31-June 1); San Francisco (July 12-13); Santa Barbara, Calif. (September 6-7); New York (October 18-19); and Charlotte, N.C. (October 25-26). Registration is also open for the remaining 2013 Avon Walks in Santa Barbara, Calif. (September 7-8); San Francisco (September 28-29); New York (October 19-20); and Charlotte, N.C. (October 26-27).
At the midpoint of its 2013 Avon Walk season, more than 7,000 women and men have participated in Avon Walks in Houston, Washington, Boston and Chicago, raising nearly $16 million to fund leading cancer centers, research institutions and community-based organizations in the Walk regions, as well as hundreds of additional grants to breast cancer research and access programs across the country.
Since 2003, more than 187,000 Avon Walk participants have collectively walked more than 6.2 million miles – a total of more than 247 times around the globe. All of that walking and fund-raising has helped the Avon Foundation support more than 3 million mammograms in the United States and award more than 2,300 grants for breast cancer research, clinical care and support services.
"We are thrilled to be returning to our eight Avon Walk cities once again in 2014. The dedication of our thousands of Walkers and Crew from across the country have helped the Avon Foundation raise nearly $488 million to accelerate critical, life-saving breast cancer research and to improve access to breast health screening and care for those in need. The Avon Foundation is inspired by the energy and devotion of each and every Avon Walker and Crew member," said Avon Foundation for Women President Carol Kurzig.
The Avon Walk series, the Avon Foundation's largest fund-raising event, consists of eight non-competitive weekend fund-raising walks for all fitness levels, which run from April through October. Each walker raises at least $1,800 in donations and trains physically for the event, which offers the option of walking up to a marathon (26.2 miles) or a marathon and a half (39.3 miles) over a weekend. The Avon Walkers so far in 2013 include nearly 1,000 breast cancer survivors united by their shared desire to eradicate breast cancer and help those touched by the disease.
Often described by participants as a "life-changing weekend," the Avon Walk weekend kicks off with an inspiring opening ceremony on Saturday morning, followed by walking up to a marathon. Participants spend the night at the Avon Walk "Wellness Village," a "tent city" with two-person pink tents, hot showers, hot meals, entertainment, and activities. On Sunday, walkers complete the final 13.1-mile leg of their journey, followed by an inspiring closing ceremony and the presentation of grants to leading breast cancer care and research organizations. REMEMBER, EARLY DETECTION HELPS SAVE LIVES. Get a mammogram. Know your breasts and report any changes to your doctor. Talk to your doctor about your risk. And encourage women around you to do the same. Don't forget, men can get breast cancer, too.
