AVL Joins Department of Energy's Workplace Charging Challenge
PLYMOUTH, Mich., March 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- AVL announced today that they have joined the U.S. Department of Energy's Workplace Charging Challenge, which aims to expand the availability of workplace charging for American workers – increasing the convenience of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) and providing drivers with more options.
"By helping develop alternative-energy engines for the automotive industry, we often like to say we work in the future," said Don Manvel, AVL's North American Chairman. "By installing these charging stations, we're helping build the infrastructure that will allow our people to take advantage of the technology they work on every day."
AVL is one of a number of major companies to have signed on to this, the second wave of the challenge that began in January, including Bentley Systems, Biogen Idec, Bloomberg LP, The Coca-Cola Company, the City of Sacramento, Dell, Facebook, The Hartford, The Hertz Corporation, National Grid, New York Power Authority, NRG Energy, OSRAM SYLVANIA, Raytheon Company and Southern California Edison. The first wave included 3M, Chrysler Group, Duke Energy, Eli Lilly and Co., Ford Motor Co., General Electric, General Motors Co., Google, Nissan Motor Co, San Diego Gas & Electric, Siemens, Tesla Motors, and Verizon.
"These American companies are taking strong steps to make their operations smarter and more fuel-efficient – setting an example for others to follow and helping America lead the global race for a growing industry," said Energy Secretary Steven Chu.
By signing the Workplace Charging Pledge, each Partner organization commits to assessing workforce PEV charging demands, and then developing and implementing a plan to install workplace charging infrastructure for at least one major worksite location. AVL has already installed one charging station, and a second station is currently under construction.
