TAMPA, Fla., May 11, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Avesta is proud to announce that Marlena Leary, Service Manager at Avesta, was named the Cristo Rey Tampa Supervisor of the Year for overseeing the corporate work study program with the Cristo Rey Tampa High School. The program, which provides inner-city youth with professional work experience to prepare them for college and the workforce, is supported by Avesta because of its desire to serve its neighbors in Tampa through more than just business.
Avesta first partnered with Cristo Rey Network two and a half years ago to support the building of the Cristo Rey Tampa High School by providing $150,000 in in-kind services, such as marketing, accounting and construction support. The school officially opened its doors in August 2016. Over the past year, Avesta has sponsored 11 students in the school's work study program. Leary has been the supervisor and source of support for the students, teaching them valuable skills needed for the workforce, such as communication and organizational skills, professionalism and confidence.
"I am honored to have been named the Cristo Rey Tampa Supervisor of the Year. Working with the students from Cristo Rey Tampa High School is a blessing," said Leary. "It has been rewarding to see the positive impact the corporate work study program has made on students. Further, I'm proud of Avesta and its commitment and investment to me and this program."
The 11 students who have been part of the corporate work study program at Avesta have worked on a variety of different projects from learning new software to greeting guests and working with different teammates. Leary has seen students excel when working on the Avestar, an internal newsletter that is sent out to employees monthly to highlight exceptional work and announcements.
"Students have been able to sharpen their communication skills and attention to detail, which are great building blocks to develop a strong work ethic," said Leary. "I love watching each student become more confident not only in an office setting, but also as young adults. I look forward to many more years partnering with Cristo Rey Tampa High School."
