Automotive News February 15 Issue Addresses Toyota, New Business Models and the Death of Saturn
DETROIT, Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Here are details of three major stories in the upcoming February 15 issue of Automotive News.
Toyota remains in the spotlight in a page one story written by Automotive News Los Angeles reporter Kathy Jackson. With millions of recalled cars, a battered brand image and tanking sales and residuals, Toyota dealers are beginning to rage — and they were due to give company executives an earful at the National Automobile Dealers Association convention in Orlando, Fla. Dealers say they were caught flatfooted three weeks ago when the company recalled 2.3 million vehicles for faulty gas pedals and suspended sales of eight models.
In a second story on page one, a new business model for auto retailing is covered by Automotive News reporters Donna Harris and Amy Wilson. Gone is the traditional emphasis on gross profits, in which dealerships primarily are concerned about the difference between invoice price and selling price. Instead, more dealers are using a variety of cost-control measures in every corner of their stores to focus on net returns and on the bottom line.
The February 15 issue of Automotive News also includes a video and print project looking at "A day in the death of Saturn" and its impact on Saturn dealers, their employees and their customers. With Saturn dealers nearing the end, Automotive News sent reporters out on Thursday, Jan. 28, to visit stores around the country. The results: Dealers try to keep a store open without new cars. Salespeople wait for shoppers. Managers search for good used cars. Customers bring in cakes and pies to console store employees.
