Automated Diabetic Retinopathy Software Now Available To Health Care Providers Across Europe Via IDx LLC's Secure Cloud Delivery System
IOWA CITY, Iowa, Oct. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- IDx LLC, a company working to transform the quality, accessibility and affordability of healthcare worldwide through automated diagnostic systems, today announced that a secure, cloud-based version of its IDx-DR product has received CE approval as a Class IIa medical device. CE marking of IDx's newest product release means that automated diabetic retinopathy screening is now immediately available to customers in the 31 countries that comprise the European Economic Area.
"Last year's introduction of IDx-DR to Europe was a watershed moment in improving accessibility to sight-saving screenings for patients with diabetes," said IDx Chairman & CEO Gary Seamans. "Today's release of the third version of our IDx-DR software – and its secure cloud delivery system – means that this technology is now available for scaled deployment."
IDx-DR version 1.3's secure cloud architecture makes diabetic retinopathy screening available to frontline healthcare providers over the internet. Hosted in a state-of-the-art, HIPAA compliant facility, IDx-DR v1.3 eliminates the need for complex computations at the healthcare provider's location, instead leveraging a series of high-end processors to analyze retinal images and deliver results back to the provider in a matter of seconds. Advanced data encryption protects patient health information as it is transferred to the IDx processors, during processing, and as results are transferred back to the provider.
"Moving our screening software into a server-based environment means more secure processing, easier access and faster results than ever before," explained Dr. Michael Abramoff, IDx's co-founder and President. "In current medical practice, every second and every cent counts. IDx is pleased to be part of preventive medicine solutions – and proud that we are able to do so without sacrificing quality for the patients and providers we serve."
CE approval for the secure cloud version of IDx-DR is a major milestone for the company, as well as a platform for its continued growth. "As we work to tap the wealth of health information in the retina – where veins, arteries, and nerve tissue all provide powerful insights into the state of patient wellness – our servers can be used to host many more diagnostic solutions," said President Dr. Abramoff.
Chairman Seamans agreed: "We believe that this company is going to fundamentally transform how the world practices diagnostic medicine."
