Auto Alliance Statement on National "Click It or Ticket" Campaign
WASHINGTON, May 17, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Even with all of the innovative safety technologies and innovations that automakers are putting into new vehicles, safety belts are still the most effective and important safety equipment found in every auto.
The Alliance supports the national 'Click It or Ticket' campaign, which runs from May 21 through June 3 and includes increased enforcement of safety belt laws across the country and around the clock.
The current national safety belt use rate is at 84 percent, and while that's a remarkable increase of about 70 percentage points over the last 30 years, as of 2010, 51 percent of all passenger vehicle fatalities were unbelted. That equates to more than 11,000 fatalities that might have been prevented if the vehicle driver and passengers had simply buckled up. Efforts like 'Click It or Ticket' are an important part of increasing safety belt use and saving even more lives.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that in 2010 alone, safety belts saved more than 12,500 lives.
