Author Battles Severe Mental Illness to Earn Master's Degree
RAWLINS, Wyo., March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- At the age of 18, Daniel Meyers was struck with a severe and persisting mental illness: schizophrenia. But instead of giving up, Meyers reached from poverty and despair to achieve an MSW and LCSW, and published his trials and discrimination due to his illness in The Spirit of the Lion (published by AuthorHouse).
Meyers' autobiography is written chronologically, from his birth in 1954 to his current state. Tragically, Meyers mother dies of lupus, and Meyer's childhood is spent in an orphanage. Meyers chronicles his early adulthood and experiences with family and friends.
His life turns into a living terror when his illness takes hold. Meyers experiences several incredible dreams, and he begins a spiritual journey that leads to new and powerful revelations. Everything becomes a puzzle, one that Meyers must piece together in order to survive.
Against all odds, Meyers fights to achieve a Bachelor's and Master's degree in social work. In The Spirit of the Lion, Meyers weaves an inspirational and educational story of battling a debilitating mental illness. He writes:
This book's title is 'The Spirit of the Lion' for a reason...He believes he has experienced much in his life, and is grateful for it. There would be no children in his life, and he believed this was why God had given him the life he had -- his life being filled with the spirit of the lion, some times more than other times. He could never have achieved what he had, helping people with metal illness, their families and other professionals, if it were not for his own illness and the people in his life who had known what happened. This meant everything to Daniel. He was now freely returning to others what he was freely given.
