STOCKBRIDGE, Mass., Sept. 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Austen Riggs Center Board of Trustees announces the appointment of Donald E. Rosen, M.D., as Medical Director/CEO, effective July, 2011. Austen Riggs' Medical Director/CEO Edward R. Shapiro, M.D., will retire on June 30, 2011 after a tenure of twenty years.

Currently, Dr. Rosen is an Associate Professor and Director of Residency Training, Department of Psychiatry at Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland, Oregon. Before joining OHSU in 1999, he served in many administrative and teaching positions during the 15 years he was at Menninger Clinic, then located in Topeka, Kansas, including Director of Psychiatry; Medical Director, MenningerCare Systems; Director of the Menninger Leadership Center and President of the Active Medical Staff. He was also the Founding Director of the Professionals in Crisis Program, Director of Athletic Services, and Director of Addiction Services.
Dr. Rosen sits on the National Advisory Council for the National Health and Human Services Department Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). He is also a consultant for the Oregon Impaired Physicians Program and the Oregon Attorney Assistance Program, and is Advisor to the Physicians Health Committee of Legacy Health Systems.
He is active in the American Association of Directors of Psychiatry Residency Training, serving on its executive committee as treasurer. He is also a faculty member of the Oregon Psychoanalytic Institute.
Dr. Rosen obtained a. B.A. and M.D. from the University of Kansas, and completed his psychiatry residency training in 1987, and psychoanalytic training in 1999, at the Karl Menninger School of Psychiatry and the Topeka Institute for Psychoanalysis, in Kansas.

So that a smooth transition for both Riggs and Dr. Rosen can be accomplished, the Board has offered the position of Medical Director/CEO to Dr. Rosen well in advance of his appointment. He will assume his new position in July, 2011. Until then, Dr. Edward Shapiro will remain as Medical Director/CEO.
