AURP Names Winners Of 2014 Awards Of Excellence
Technology Square at the Georgia Institute of Technology Receives 2014 Outstanding Research/Science Park Award
TUCSON, Ariz., Dec. 9, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Association of University Research Parks (AURP) names the Technology Square at the Georgia Institute of Technology as the 2014 Outstanding Research/Science Park, as part of AURP's Annual Awards of Excellence. This award program recognizes the achievements of outstanding research parks and those who direct them, and encourages the development of best practices among university research and science parks.
"For 10 years, we have all known that Tech Square is an outstanding university research park," said AURP President Kevin Byrne. "I am very pleased that Tech Square's excellence has been recognized and that it now joins the AURP Academy of Outstanding Research Parks."
Today, Georgia Tech's presence within Atlanta's Tech Square include the Scheller College of Business, research facilities, a Global Learning Center and a conference hotel. Georgia Tech's economic development programs, including the Advanced Technology Development Center (ATDC), which Forbes named as a "Top 12 Incubator Changing the World" in 2013, are also located in Tech Square.
Others recognized at the 2014 AURP Awards of Excellence include:
– The University Technology Park at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) - Emerging Research Park Award
The AURP Emerging Research Park Award recognizes a park, in operation less than 10 years, which excels in moving technology from the laboratory to economically viable business activities. UTP's achievements include transforming one of Chicago's poorest and troubled neighborhoods into a safe, vibrant community and creating a home for IIT's Idea Shop, where thousands of students learn about high-tech innovation each year.
– Governor James Baxter Hunt of North Carolina - Leadership Award
The AURP Leadership Award is given in recognition of a business, university or governmental leader who has made an outstanding contribution to the success and total community impact of a university research and technology park. Governor Hunt's best-known innovation leadership initiatives include the Centennial Campus at North Carolina State University and the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research.

The AURP Innovation Award recognizes a company within a university research park that has produced a substantial and meaningful innovative product or service. The AURP Career Achievement Award recognizes an individual who has made research parks a central focus of their career, achieved success with a park over a substantial period of time and received peer recognition for advancing the field of research parks. In addition to serving as President of CRC, he is an adjunct professor in the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department at Virginia Tech. Meredith serves on numerous boards of directors of private companies and charitable organizations.
