AULA Calls on Congress to Investigate Planned Parenthood's Misuse of Federal Funds at Congressional News Event
"While Congress is discussing going deeper in debt and raising the debt ceiling, our government is spending over $360 million annually on Planned Parenthood and quietly subsidizing the world's largest abortion provider with $1 million a day," said AULA President and CEO Dr. Charmaine Yoest.
WASHINGTON, July 14, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Americans United for Life Action President and CEO Dr. Charmaine Yoest joined Members of the House Thursday to address the need for Congressional investigation of Planned Parenthood's misuse and abuse of federal funding.
"The American taxpayer is giving $1 million a day to Planned Parenthood, which is unconscionable considering the pattern of Medicaid fraud among Planned Parenthood affiliates and the organization's misuse of federal funds to subsidize its abortion business," said Dr. Yoest during a news conference hosted by Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) and Rep. Randy Hultgren (R-IL), which other Members of the House of Representatives attended.
Dr. Yoest's comments continued:
"AUL's Report documents that as the government funding of Planned Parenthood has doubled since 1998, the number of abortions performed by Planned Parenthood has also doubled.
"According to last year's Government Accounting Office audit of Planned Parenthood, in the six years between 2002 and 2008, the abortion giant spent $657.1 million of taxpayer money.
"However, AUL's legal team has documented that Planned Parenthood's own annual reports from that same time period show over $2 billion in unspecified "government grants and contracts."
"That's a remarkable discrepancy. $657 million . . . or $2 billion. Which is it? And what was the money used for? During this same time period, Planned Parenthood performed over 2 million abortions. The American taxpayer deserves an accounting from Planned Parenthood for its use of scarce tax resources, and they deserve to know just how much money is really flowing into the abortion industry."
