Attorney Carney Shegerian Comments on Breast Cancer and Employment Discrimination
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 25, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The issue of employment discrimination in the face of a cancer diagnosis is gaining widespread attention. Employers from a number of countries, including the U.S., are sidestepping discrimination laws meant to protect workers from unfair employment practices based on the illness.
The latest statistics come from Mexico where the National Council to Prevent Discrimination has attempted to curtail the abuse of employment rights based on breast cancer diagnosis. There, four in ten women with breast cancer diagnosis reported experiencing employment discrimination as a result in 2013, according to Building People, a cancer support foundation.
Noting that similar occurrences are also on the rise in the U.S., Los Angeles employment rights attorney Carney Shegerian is concerned about this growing trend among employers. "A cancer diagnosis should not automatically lead to an adverse employment decision. Such a phenomenon is an outright violation of U.S. laws prohibiting discrimination at work based on medical conditions and disabilities."
"It's up to employees to know their rights and to seek professional legal help as early on in the process as possible," Shegerian went on to say. "A cancer diagnosis can be a devastating blow. Workers should not have to worry about losing their job or being overlooked for promotion or any other form of injustice just because they are forced to deal with an illness."
An award winning trial attorney, Shegerian has tried a number of employment discrimination cases successfully, with a growing track record of winning verdicts. Shegerian has won over 68 jury trials, including over 28 seven and eight figure verdicts, and has an over 95% success rate.
